Fr Michael Bombak - “The Name above all names: Living the Jesus Prayer in the Modern World”
Fr. Michael Bombak is a graduate of the Metropolitan Shepytysky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on January 1, 2016, and completed his Master of Theology through Newman Theological College in 2020. Over the last three years Fr. Michael has developed a series of Jesus Prayer challenges-Jesus Prayer 33 and 100- to teach and deepen the practice of this beautiful treasure of the Church. Fr. Michael is the pastor of St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic parish in Calgary, Alberta, where he lives with his wife Kimberly and their five children.
Certainly one of the most famous prayers of the Eastern Christian tradition is “Jesus Prayer” or “The Prayer of the Heart.” So central is this prayer to the identity and common piety of Eastern Christians that it is sometimes simply referred to as “the Prayer.” Over the course of this Study Day weekend some important questions will be addressed: What is the pedigree and tradition of this prayer? How has it been practiced throughout the centuries? And most importantly, why is this prayer of such significance to us in our contemporary time? Whether you are new to this beautiful prayer or have made its practice central to your prayer rule, there will be some important “take aways” to deepen your prayer over this conference.

    Marking the musical moments for myself because I always come back to listen to it. I just love the harmonies. One thing I find interesting is that they say the Our Father in recto tone even though there exists a harmonized version that was picked up probably for our Slavic brethren. You can hear it at Holy Transfiguration in McLean VA or from St. George Melkite’s CD of Melkite music if not online. 17:00 Trisagion 19:59 Litany of Supplication (?) 24:10 Cherubic hymn 27:49 “(we welcome) the King of (all)…” 28:52 Litany of completion 37:37 “Sanctus” 42:58 Heirmos 48:40 Our Father 51:58 Koinonikon for Sundays and Feasts

Give us a list of all these wonderful customs that you have been able to preserve or shut up! Really it is all too much.

    We're currently going through another apocalypse and we should have spoken up and done something about it. But we've been through at least 7 apocalypses in the last 2000 years. Every time there is social change, some people claim it's 'End of the World'. But the "End of an Age" on a social level should not be conflated with the "End of Time" in a universal sense. (no sarcasm intended)

    I assume that this man completed at least elementary school... Perhaps he once heard about the heresy of Caesaropapism (a situation where a bishop - in this case the bishop of the city of Rome - presents himself as the head of the church). Those who have fallen into that heresy cannot be Orthodox, even though they try to imitate Orthodoxy with external manifestations. But the Holy Spirit is no longer there...

    • @fernandoduranmanzano
      @fernandoduranmanzano 5 місяців тому

      I am starting from the premise that you have no idea what you are talking about, based on the fact that your definition of what Caesaropapism is, is simply wrong and your knowledge and understandings of the history and true teaching of the church are presented to be quite limited or simply null. Caesaropapism is the idea of combining the power of secular government with, or making it superior to, the spiritual authority of the Christian Church (definition copied from orthodoxwiki for its simplicity). Paradoxically, the greatest examples of this phenomenon are found on the eastern side; such as the examples of Byzantium and its emperors or more recent ones in the Tzars (like Ivan the Terrible) or even what we see today in Putin's Russia and that of his "altar boy": the patriarch Kirill. On the western side, an example of what is referred to when we talk about Caesaropapism would be that of the Anglican church and King Henry VIII. No one who is consistent and knowledgeable of the history and teachings of the Church can affirm that this has ever referred to the bishop of Rome (I am sure that one can cite individuals who can affirm such things, as can also be find individuals asserting other kinds of errors; but these do not define what the Church actually teaches and have maintained as doctrine). Regarding the bishop of Rome and his universal jurisdiction, his authority and primacy over the rest is something accepted, confirmed and reflected in the ecumenical councils, the historical witness and in the fathers of the church themselves. Here I leave you a quote from one of the church fathers most revered by the eastern orthodox, with the purpose (and hope) of encouraging you to study this matter in depth, and that the truth might set you free, separating you from deceptions and healing you from schisms contrary to the will of Christ and far from being the result of the work of the Holy Spirit: "The extremities of the earth, and everyone in every part of it who purely and rightly confesses the Lord, looks directly towards the Most Holy Roman Church and her confession and faith, as to a sun of unfailing light awaiting from her the brilliant radiance of the sacred dogmas of our Fathers, according to which the inspired and holy Councils have stainlessly and piously decreed. For, from the descent of the Incarnate Word amongst us, all the churches in every part of the world have held the greatest Church alone to be their base and foundation, seeing that according to the promise of Christ Our Savior, the gates of hell will never prevail against her, that she has the keys of the orthodox confession and right faith in Him, that she opens the true and exclusive religion to such men as approach with piety, and she shuts up and locks every heretical mouth which speaks against the Most High.' -(Maximus. Opuscula theologica et polemica, Migne, Patr. Graec. vol. 90)

    The word "Icon" is a Greek word and translates as "image". For the icon to have the power of guidance, defense, etc. it must be sanctified with the prayer of the Orthodox priest. There are also wizard icons with charms on them. The icon must be purchased only from the monastery or church and not be recieved as gift. The word "grace" translates as "the right given by Jesus Christ to priests to offer prayers of release, baptism, communion, etc.", grace can only have the priest and not a icon or anyone else.

      I agree, it is ridiculous in this day to have 2 jurisdictions. The problem is that the Ukrainian jurisdiction is still very ethnic and Ukrainian. The Ruthenian jurisdiction has completely Americanized and cast off practically everything that hints of any Slavic ancestry. Hence the name "Ukrainian Catholic" for one, and "Byzantine Catholic" for the other. That factor is why uniting the two again wouldn't work.

    St John Chrysostom was an enthusiastic all-round good organiser and an example to try to follow. We will soon be at the start of October, which is the Month of the Rosary in the English-speaking world. Please say the Rosary for families. You could also add the October Prayer for the Intercession of Saint Joseph which was introduced by Pope Leo XIII. Highlight the text of any prayer mentioned here with your mouse, right-click and then search the Internet for more information about the prayer. Doing this is also a useful secular skill. Let’s be ruthless in the exploitation of new technology to further the Christian religion. We can be enthusiastic and well-organised as well.

    Following St John Chrysostom, I would say that the family is the Church in miniature, and something to be encouraged. By contrast European Christianity is facing demographic winter, as Pope Francis has noticed. What we could do with are two synods on the family. One would discuss the difficulties which single Christians face in meeting the opposite sex, and the other would discuss encouraging married Christians to have more children. Actually we have had two synods during this papacy, but they were about railroading through a change of practice on divorce. First we had the primary motion failing to get the required two-thirds majority. Then we had Amoris Laetitia which is proximate to heresy. Then we had the Scicluna-Grech interpretation which is actually heretical. This papacy is a remarkable failure.
